Sober Living in Malibu: What to Expect

Reviewed September 3, 2026. General information only, not clinical advice.

Sober living is recovery housing, not clinical treatment. Routines, house rules, costs and availability vary by property, so the answers below are questions to ask rather than promises. Synergy Empowering Recovery directly provides sober living, detox and PHP. IOP and other non-direct services may be available only through a consent-based partner referral, with no promise of current partner availability. Insurance depends on the plan, the requested service, eligibility, current availability and other requirements.

Housing versus treatment, and direct versus partner referral

These are general definitions for orientation only. Which service applies to any individual is decided through assessment by qualified professionals.

Comparison of sober living, detox, PHP and IOP: what each is, whether Synergy provides it directly, and what to verify.
ServiceWhat it isProvided directly by Synergy? What to verify
Sober living (recovery housing)Housing with shared expectations and peer accountability. It is housing, not clinical treatment, and it does not by itself include therapy or medical care.Yes. Provided directly by Synergy Empowering Recovery.Which residence and setting is being discussed, the written house rules, what the fee includes, and whether anything is open at the moment.
DetoxA supervised withdrawal-management period that some people need before another level of care begins.Yes. Provided directly by Synergy Empowering Recovery.Whether detox is appropriate for the individual, which location or setting applies, and current availability.
PHP (partial hospitalization program)Structured daytime treatment with scheduled sessions and no overnight stay in the program itself.Yes. Provided directly by Synergy Empowering Recovery.Whether PHP is the appropriate level of care, the schedule, which location or setting applies, and how housing and program days would fit together.
IOP (intensive outpatient program) and other non-direct servicesA separate, less time intensive outpatient level of care than PHP.No. Synergy does not directly provide IOP. IOP, and any service Synergy does not directly provide, may be available only through a consent-based partner referral.Who the partner provider would be, what that provider confirms about its own services, and that a referral is not an offer, an admission, or a promise of current partner availability.

For how housing and a daytime program are sequenced, see PHP with sober housing in Los Angeles.

What to verify before choosing a Malibu sober living home

Ask every provider the same questions, including Synergy, so the answers can be compared. Nothing below describes any current Synergy policy; each item is a question to ask about the specific property under consideration.

  1. 1Which exact property and setting is being discussed, and is that the residence a person would actually live in?
  2. 2What is currently available, and for which start date? Availability changes and is tracked separately from program availability.
  3. 3What are the eligibility expectations for that residence, and who decides whether they are met?
  4. 4Are the house rules written down, and can they be read before agreeing to move in?
  5. 5What are the curfew, guest and visitor expectations, and how are exceptions handled?
  6. 6What are the testing policies, and what are the medication storage and self-administration policies?
  7. 7Is anyone on site, in what role, and during which hours? Is there any supervision, or is the residence peer-run?
  8. 8What are the fees, when are they due, what is included in them, and what is billed separately?
  9. 9What accessibility features exist, and what transportation options serve the property?
  10. 10How are clinical appointments coordinated, and who is responsible for arranging travel to them?

What a typical day may include

Schedules vary by property and by the person's own commitments. There is no standard day, and nothing here describes a schedule any resident is guaranteed. Use these as questions when comparing residences.

  • Is there a set wake-up time, and is attendance at any morning check-in expected?
  • Are meals provided, shared or the resident's own responsibility?
  • Are residents expected to attend outside recovery meetings, and how many?
  • Are work, school or remote work allowed during the day, and under what conditions?
  • Are there chores, house meetings or shared responsibilities, and how often?
  • What are the evening expectations, quiet hours and curfew?
  • How do program days, when a person is also attending a program, change the rest of the schedule?

Malibu compared with other Los Angeles settings

A location is a practical decision about fit, travel and cost. This section makes no claim that one setting produces better results than another.

Fit
Some people prefer a quieter coastal setting with fewer neighbors and less foot traffic. Others prefer a denser neighborhood with more services within walking distance. Neither is inherently better for recovery, and the right answer depends on the individual.
Commute
Malibu is farther from central Los Angeles than West Hollywood, Santa Monica or the Pico corridor. If a person will attend a program, appointments or work in the city, the drive time and traffic pattern should be checked before committing.
Access
Public transit, rideshare availability, grocery access and meeting density differ by neighborhood. Ask what is realistically reachable without a car from any property under consideration.
Rules
House rules are set per property, not per city. A Malibu residence and a West Hollywood residence may have different curfew, guest and testing expectations, so compare the written rules rather than the location.
Cost
Housing costs vary by property, room type and what is included. Compare the total monthly figure and the list of inclusions side by side rather than comparing cities.

For a broader comparison process across the city, see how to choose a rehab center in Los Angeles.

Costs and insurance limits

Housing and clinical services are not handled the same way, and they should be asked about separately. This page names no insurer, states no acceptance, and makes no promise about payment or benefits. Insurance depends on the plan, the requested service, eligibility, current availability and other requirements, and a review of information is not a guarantee of payment or admission.

General information about how eligibility is reviewed is on the insurance verification page. Please do not include sensitive medical information in a public form or email.

Partner referral disclosure

Synergy Empowering Recovery directly provides sober living, detox and PHP. IOP and any other service Synergy does not directly provide may be available only through a consent-based partner referral. A referral requires the person's consent, is made to a separate organization, and is not an offer, an admission, or a promise of current partner availability, coverage, placement or outcome.

Primary sources

These sources are independent of Synergy and cover general recovery-housing principles. Linking to them is not a claim about Synergy or about any specific property.
